Mathematics, Primary and Junior Part 1

Vanessa Hogarth

The goal of this course is to broaden your understanding of what it means to be mathematically literate and to learn how to develop this type of literacy in all your students. To support student learning in mathematics, teachers need both subject-matter knowledge and pedagogical knowledge. The type of subject-matter knowledge teachers need goes well beyond a general ability to do math. It's specific mathematical knowledge and skills unique to teachers. Mathematics Primary/Junior is designed to support you in acquiring this mathematical and pedagogical knowledge. Your learning will begin with interpreting and understanding the resources provided in the course. You will deepen and extend your understanding by discussing the ideas with your colleagues online and at school. A significant part of your learning will happen when you take the ideas back to your classroom. Monitor the impact of these new practices on your students' engagement and learning, and reflect on how you can improve. Where possible, tasks in this course will include options for experiential learning. If you are currently teaching a math class, consider choosing these experiential options. In this course you will have the opportunity to: understand the theory of learning mathematics that is foundational to the Ministry of Education curriculum and instructional practices outlined in supporting documents understand the myriad factors that have an impact on students' math learning (intellectual, social, emotional, physical, linguistic, cultural, spiritual, and moral development) learn how to create a safe, inclusive, equitable, and productive math-learning environment understand the developmental nature of math learning and know how to support a range of developmental levels and special needs using universal design, differentiation strategies, and accommodations use a design-down planning process for lesson planning and year-long planning integrate Ministry of Education assessment policies and guidelines into planning assessment in mathematics explore strategies for collaboration with in-school personnel and parents/guardians apply the OTF professional standards and ethical guidelines to your teaching and professional learning in mathematics
