Senior Social Sciences

This course introduces teachers to the Senior Social Sciences area of study as outlined by the Ontario Ministry of Education. This course will familiarize educators with the Senior Social Science curriculum and will provide information on how to teach these courses to a diverse student population. By participating in an online community, teachers will share ideas, concerns, and best practices. They will explore a variety of Ministry documents that support professional practice. Course participants also will undertake tasks that foster professional development while contributing to the growth of their colleagues. In this course, you will have the opportunity to: critically examine and assess Ministry of Education curriculum policy and documents in the design and delivery of Senior Social Science curriculum explore theoretical foundations and learning theories specific to this course of study examine critical issues related to the Senior Social Science courses discuss methods of fostering inclusive learning environments for adolescents through effective classroom management strategies, knowledge of adolescent development, and sensitivity to cultural differences identify ways to meet the needs of students with exceptionalities through accommodations and/or modifications to program plans explore ways of increasing student engagement using technology generate a unit plan for a Senior Social Science course using backward design develop and implement a variety of assessment and evaluation tools for a Senior Social Science course
